Layout

The goal of this project was to create a complex layout system that could be applied to any manuscript for mass production.

I began by researching content structures that common typographic books share and set up a table of contents.

To create the layout, I:

  • Set up the book’s dimensions,

  • Created a grid system,

  • Picked out type faces and sizes for paragraphs, titles and headings,

  • Set up a master page layout for the headers, footers and page numbers.

Once this system was developed, I populated the pages with the manuscript and applied the system to the copy.

Next Steps:

After the paragraph and type styles were applied, I continued to refine the system until I felt that it read well.

I broke up the manuscript into units and chapters - each one with it's own unique characteristics and illustration.

Final stage:

Once the finishing touches were applied to the content, I designed a cover and printed the spreads so that I could make the book by hand, using the perfect bound process.

Conclusion:

Now I have a unique, curated reference book that I keep at my desk in case I need to look something up or get inspired.
